Subjects of my sketches are usually meaningful people, objects, and places. I tend to combine photorealism with expressionism; this includes increasing contrast between light and dark areas for dramatic effect (also known as chiaroscuro), as well as making fine adjustments to facial expressions and details.
I use a wide range of pencils for heightened depth perception, ranging from 9H (the hardest and lightest shade) to 9B (the softest and boldest shade). The brightest lighting effects can be achieved by removing shading with an electric eraser to carefully reveal negative space.
I occasionally introduce charcoals, inks and drawing pens when I am looking for a substantially darker shade in particular places.
All sketches are applied to thick, absorbent A5 paper – usually of 160 grammes per square metre (GSM) thickness – and are finished with fixative spray coating to preserve detail and prevent smears. My preferred art supplies are those manufactured by Faber-Castell.
