Canvases are coated with a thick layer of gesso to provide a smooth, absorbent surface before painting commences.
My paintings tend to incorporate heavy doses of expressionism; this includes experimenting with textures using modelling paste and palette knives as well as colour vibrancy.
A technique I particularly enjoy incorporating is cangiante, which involves using colour manipulation to achieve the effect of shading, contouring and depth-perception whilst simultaneously preserving vibrancy and saturation.
My preferred painting supplies are those manufactured by Winsor & Newton. I find their Artists’ Oil Colour range to be of notable quality, with exceptionally strong pigments that can be thinned or thickened to desired effect using turpentine or Liquin, respectively.
If I am looking for a smoother, more malleable blend with slower drying times, I mix my oil paints with linseed oil. I also occasionally combine oils with acrylics and artist inks for increased vibrancy.
