I supported Google with the design and development of indoor map navigation for major European shopping centres.
Primarily based at Google's London office, we were deployed to Italy, France and other British cities to map shopping centres using Adobe Illustrator and proprietary Google software.
I triangulated publicly available Wi-Fi frequencies and mapped the different signal strengths of various indoor hotspots to precise coordinates through the proprietary software. This enabled mobile users to detect their precise locations and navigate seamlessly across different shops and floor levels.
WiFi signals were used to detect user positioning as Global Positioning System (GPS) waves cannot transverse shopping centre walls.
As a result of this project, users can do more than simply navigate between points of interest; they can now navigate within these buildings.
